Dr. Walter J. Song was raised in Columbia, MD. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. He then earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College in 2002. Following medical school, Dr. Song completed his Internship and Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut. During his training, he worked with the team surgeons for the University of Connecticut men’s and women’s basketball teams, and football team. His training during residency included the entire spectrum of general Orthopedic Surgery, including trauma surgery.

After completing residency, Dr. Song pursued further sub-specialist fellowship training in Upper Extremity Surgery at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. This fellowship concentrated on the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and disorders of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. During this time he participated in the care of professional athletes, while working with the team hand surgeon for the Pittsburgh Pirates Major League Baseball team.

Dr. Song’s area of expertise is the Upper Extremity. He has specialized training in the surgical as well as non-surgical treatment of traumatic and degenerative disorders of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. This includes sports related injuries, work related and repetitive use injuries, fractures, dislocations, nerve and tendon disorders, and arthritis. Dr. Song is trained in the latest techniques for arthroscopic shoulder, elbow and wrist surgery, including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. He has a special interest in elbow and standard shoulder replacement surgery, as well as reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.

Dr. Song has been involved in research throughout his career. He has authored multiple book chapters and journal articles on various upper extremity topics, including ulnar nerve injuries in the throwing athlete, elbow arthritis, calcific rotator cuff tendonitis, and radial head fractures.

Dr. Song is Board Eligible with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Medical Association. He and his wife Tina enjoy their daughter, Alexandra. Dr. Song joined Nevada Orthopedic & Spine Center in September of 2008.
